Ranveer Singh-SLB, Ranbir Kapoor-Ayan Mukerji, Varun Dhawan-Shashank Khaitan: A look at blockbuster actor-director Jodis

A few days back, reports emerged that Mohit Suri is reuniting with his Aashiqui 2 actor Aditya Roy Kapur for a romantic thriller set in Goa. The film would also feature Disha Patani. It would be Aditya's second collaboration with Suri after the super-hit love story with Shraddha Kapoor. In the past few years, we have seen a strong trend of young actors choosing to do projects with certain filmmakers and scoring box-office successes. The only exceptions to this formula seem to be Ayushmann Khurrana and Sidharth Malhotra. The current rage Vicky Kaushal has also done two films with Anurag Kashyap, Raman Raghav and Manmarziyaan but they didn't click with the audience. Here is a look at some of the most successful combos that rocked screens in recent times...

Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone with Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Critics and film buffs now almost revere the jodi of Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone and SLB. Their mutual admiration has translated into some brilliant films like Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018). The filmmaker feels that Deepika Padukone is an effortless yet nuanced actress while Ranveer is on his way to greatness. After three mega hits, he is not done with the duo and says he's keen to collaborate again with them. Both the actors have swept awards when they have worked with him and their films have done a business of over 1,000 crore till date. So, please let the partnership continue!

Rajkummar Rao - Hansal Mehta

Undoubtedly, one of the finest filmmaker - actor combinations of recent times, they are the uncrowned kings of content-driven cinema. The two have given cinema lovers hard-hitting films like Aligarh (2015), Shahid (2012), Omerta (2018) and CityLights (2014). Hansal Mehta was also a part of Bose: Dead Or Alive. They also announced their fifth collaboration, Turram Khan last year. Rao has said, "Hansal sir plays a very instrumental role in my acting career. He has created some interesting and memorable characters for me. I trust him blindly." On the occasion of Rao's birthday, he posted a message for the Stree star calling him a son, brother and friend. Commenting on Rajkummar's success, he said, "Now he has become the hero of the masses and there is acceptance by the masses as a popular actor and it's increasing that is making me proud. He works very hard. We both won National Award together and it was a big moment for us." Rajkummar won Critics Awards for his performance in Shahid. Money is somewhat irrelevant for this duo that believes in the legacy of their films.

Tiger Shroff - Sabbir Khan

The fit and fab young stud made his debut with Sabbir Khan's Heropanti (2014). Everyone loved the actor's screen presence especially his skills when it came to the action sequences. They followed it up with Baaghi (2016), which was a blockbuster. After two successes, the jodi tasted failure with Munna Michael (2017). The film was slammed from all quarters and people suggested that the two take a break. Baaghi 2 was directed by Ahmed Khan. However, their success ratio is not bad at all. It seems he wants to make another film with Tiger but the actor is busy till the end of 2019 to take up Sabbir's project.

Sushant Singh Rajput - Abhishek Kapoor

The TV star made his debut in Bollywood with Kapoor's Kai Po Che! in 2013. He walked away with maximum accolades for his heartfelt performance as a cricket coach, Ishaan Bhatt. They share a brilliant working relationship and he was again chosen for Kedarnath (2018). People loved him as the shy, good-hearted and somewhat melancholic, Mansoor Khan, a Muslim porter. He was also approached for Fitoor (2016) but let go of that project. Abhishek told DNA after Kedarnath casting, "Moreover, he brings a lot to the table as a performer as he has his own way of crafting his character. What s also important is that he has managed to retain his innocence, which is important while essaying different characters." Both Kedarnath and Kai Po Che! were loved by the masses and classes.

Varun Dhawan - Shashank Khaitan

The young superstar and director have done Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014) and Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017) together. Both the films were huge money-spinners. Buzz is that they will reunite for Rannbhoomi, which is going to be an epic saga.

Kartik Aaryan - Luv Ranjan

Like Hansal Mehta, Luv Ranjan has been instrumental in shaping Kartik Aaryan's career with the successful Pyaar Ka Punchnama films and his first 100-crore hit, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. They seem to bring out the best in each other. There were reports of a fallout between them due to monetary reasons but Kartik rubbished it. He said, "There hasn't been discussion between me and Luv (Ranjan) sir about money. So, I don't know from where these kind of news (reports) are emerging. We both have started our respective careers together so there hasn't been discussion about money and it will never be in the future as well. I just want to clarify that there is nothing wrong between me and Luv sir. I think we both are same as we used to be earlier."

Ranbir Kapoor - Ayan Mukerji

The two are BFFs and seem to bring out the best in each other, professionally as well. Ranbir made his debut with Ayan's Wake Up Sid (2009) that was such a refreshing coming-of-age film. Four years later they delivered a blockbuster with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), which is another memorable film for youngsters. All eyes are on Brahmastra that releases in the second half of this year. Their bromance makes for many Insta-worthy moments and it's through him that we often get a glimpse into Ranbir's life. Ayan refers to their relationship as an old marriage. He once said on Anupama Chopra's Front Row, "I feel I can take him for granted a lot of times. Ranbir is this big star in the film. Normally, you feel everything should be catered around him. We should try to pack him up early. I feel no such obligation with Ranbir. We treat him like he is a first timer."

In the coming years, we will see these actors doing more films with these directors, hopefully! Stay tuned to BL for more scoops and updates!
