Priyamani is one of the very popular actresses down South, both critically and commercially. Many in Bollywood may not be knowing this, but she is Vidya Balan's cousin. Whether you call it a coincidence or pure talent that runs in the family, but both the cousins have won National Award for Best Actress. While Vidya Balan got it for The Dirty Picture, Priyamani snagged it for her gritty performance in Paruthiveeran.
However, unlike Vidya Balan who got a big break in Bollywood thanks to her debut in Parineeta, Priyamani's initial films were nothing to write much about, before she made it big with Paruthiveeran. However, she can proudly claim to have acted in 5 languages - Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and even Hindi. In Bollywood, she played the sister of Abhishek Bachchan in the Hindi version of Raavan, shook a leg with Shah Rukh Khan in Chennai Express, and was Suriya's wife in his Hindi debut in Rakta Charitra II.
On her birthday, let's look at five best performances of hers, starting with the most obvious...
Paruthiveeran
When Priyamani's name was announced as the Best Actress for the National Awards for her role in this film, no one was surprised. She was exemplary as the village girl in total love with a ruffian, played by Karthi in his debut film, and has to face some really shattering consequences as a result. Her brilliance peaks in her death scene, that places a hard punch in your guts, as you realise that such incident do happen in your country!
Thirakkatha
Another wonderful performance that was so overlooked by the National awards jury that year. Priyamani plays a yesteryear popular actress, who had an affair with an emerging actor then and who had gone off the radar for some time. Prithviraj, who plays a young director, goes off in search of her, and even succeeds only to find there are more earth-shattering secrets behind her disappearance. Thirakkatha is said to be based on the affair gone wrong between Malayalam actress Srividya and Kamal Haasan.
Charulatha
Though this horror flick, a remake of the Thai flick , was not a huge success, Priyamani's role as the Siamese twins with contrasting natures has been widely appreciated!
Raavan/ Raavanan
Priyamani played the sister to both Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram in the Hindi as well as the Tamil versions respectively. Even though her role was small, she made most of it with a very impactful performance, that you will feel she was the best thing about the movie!
Ninaithale Inikkum
In this Tamil remake of the Malayalam hit Classmates, Priyamani plays the female lead in the film opposite Prithviraj. Though she takes on the role from an impressive Kavya Madhavan, she makes the role her own and is quite impressive!
