There is no doubt that the year 2019 has started off quite well at the movies. We have had 100-crore plus hits like Uri-The Surgical Strike, Total Dhamaal and Kesari and some huge flops as well. The failure of films like Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, Sonchiriya and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga was disappointing as they were all well-made products. Others tanked because the content or execution was kind of shoddy. Here is a look at the flops of 2019....
Why Cheat India
Made at a budget of Rs 20 crores, the lifetime collections of the film barely managed to cross Rs 9 crores. It was a disaster at the box office. The teaser and trailer of the film looked very promising and Emraan Hashmi delivered well as the education broker but people rejected the film. Critics blamed it on the inconsistent screenplay and choppy editing. It was an unique concept dealing with the exam mafia but its treatment wasn't upto the mark. The audience rejected it from day one and it could never recover.

Sonchiriya
Hailed by critics as one of the best films of 2019, Sonchiriya tanked badly at the box office. It was made on a budget of Rs 30 crores and managed to rake in just Rs 6 crores. The film clashed with Luka Chuppi and just managed to get 720 screens in India. This was seen as one of the main reasons behind its failure along with bad publicity. Then, reports surfaced on how some theatres showed a dubbed Hindi version when the original was in Bundelkhandi. This upset the viewers. It was unfortunate as the film had tremendous merit in terms of performances, acting and direction.

Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota
Like Sonchiriya, MKDNH was also loved by the critics. They went gaga over Abhimanyu Dassani and Radhika Madan's performance. The film was described as a loving tribute to all the 90's films.

Photograph
After The Lunchbox, Ritesh Batra again returned with an evocative tale about two souls in chaotic Mumbai. Both critics and audiences gave a mixed review to Photograph. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra's performances and some gorgeous cinematography were the only takeaways from the film.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
Sonam Kapoor's simple film about Sweety Chaudhary, a small-town Punjabi girl got positive to mixed reviews from critics. The film was made on a budget of Rs 30 crores and just managed to cover the costs with its domestic and overseas collection. Some fab performances from Rajkummar Rao, Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and the ensemble cast was the plus point of the film. It also had good music. Some argued that the plot was too simplistic but there is no doubt that ELKDTAL is one of the best films made on same-sex relationships in recent times.

Milan Talkies
Ali Fazal and Shraddha Srinath's film was panned by the critics for its predictable treatment and excesses. Many felt the film was too lengthy for its own good while others blamed the music. Despite the lead pair's sparkling performances, Milan Talkies tanked.

The Fakir Of Venice
Anand Surapur's film got released years after it was made. While people liked the premise from the trailers, it failed to get footfalls in the box-office.

Amavas
Critics did not like the Nargis Fakhri horror flick and rejected it outright.

The Accidental Prime Minister
Directed by Vijay Gutte, the film was a chronicle of the terms when Dr Manmohan Singh served as the PM. Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanne put it brilliant performances.

Other disasters at the box office were Fraud Saiyyan and Mere Pyaare Prime Minister. We saw some good films tanking, which was not a good thing but then there were the hits. Stay tuned to BL for more updates!
