Happy birthday Hariharan: 10 songs of the National Award-winning singer that will make you nostalgic

Music has healing powers, but sometimes it's the magical voice which makes us feel all those emotions. And today, one such magical voice turns a year older, we are talking about none other than musician Hariharan. Though he turns 64 today, we can vouch that he can be the playback voice for the young brigade of Bollywood.

Born to renowned Carnatic vocalists Shrimati Alamelu and the late Anantha Subramani, Hariharan has inherited his parents' musical talents. The singer was also exposed to classical music from a young age. While in his teen, he was inspired by the songs of Mehdi Hassan. Pursuing his passion for ghazals, Hariharan started training under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and would practise for 13 hours a day at a stretch.

Hariharan began his career by performing at concerts and also singing for TV shows. Things changed after 1977 when he won the top prize in All India Sur Singaar competition. He was signed on by the late music director Jaidev to sing for Gaman which starred Farooq Sheikh and Smita Patil. He sang Ajeeb sa neha mujhpar guzar gaya yaaron which was a super hit at that time and also earned him his first ever National Award nomination. He entered the Tamil industry and sang for AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam's Roja. Since then he has collaborated with several music directors on films like Minsara Kanavu, Jeans, Taal, Rangeela, Guru and Enthiran to name a few. He has sung for Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Bhojpuri and Telugu films too.

Without further ado, let's listen to the singer's nine soulful renditions

Roja was a blockbuster hit, thanks to its patriotic story and soulful music by AR Rahman. Hariharan s patriotic song hit the right notes and the entire album was listed in Time magazine's 10 Best Soundtracks of all time.

Tu Hi Re Bombay (1995)

Composed by AR Rahman and directed by Mani Ratnam, Bombay was released in Telugu in 1995 and was later dubbed into various languages. Featuring Arvind Swami and Manisha Koirala, this song was and still is a huge hit among masses.

Kannullo Nee Roopame Ninne Pelladatha (1996)

Starring Akkineni Nagarjuna and Tabu in lead roles, the film is a romantic drama whose music was composed by Sandeep Chowta. The chemistry between Tabu and Nagarjuna gets a perfect addition with Hariharan's voice.

Chanda Re Chanda Re Sapney (1997)

Picturised on Prabhudeva and Kajol, this beautiful rendition should be a part of your must-listen songs! Yet another AR Rahman composition, this song is a clear winner, be it for music or choreography. Kajol and Prabhudeva have emoted their feelings very well in this dreamy number.

Mere Dushman Mere Bhai Border (1997)

Riding high on patriotism, Border touched each and every one. The music is composed by Anu Malik and Hariharan earned his first ever National award for it. This song criticises the war and describes its disastrous aftermath.

Yamaha Nagari Choodalani Vundi (1998)

What can we say, the singers' voice is pure magic! Choodalani Vundi is a Tollywood action thriller and stars Chiranjeevi, Soundarya, Anjala Zaveri and Prakash Raj. This song features megastar Chiranjeevi's journey in Kolkata and describes the beauty of the city.

Jhonka Hawa Ka Aaj Bhi Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)

Jhonka Hawa Ka Aaj Bhi describes Ajay Devgn's feeling in the film so well. Hariharan's voice is sheer magic and gives goosebumps every single time you listen to it. Composed by Ismail Darbar and penned by Mehboob, this rendition will surely melt your heart.

Aye Haraithe Guru (2007)

Yet another Mani Ratnam movie and yet another AR Rahman composition with none other than real-life couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead. Guru s album was one of the highest selling of the year.

Jeev Rangala Jogwa

The singer got his second National Award for this song. The movie itself is a National award-winning film and stars Upendra Limaye and Mukta Barve in lead roles. Shreya Ghoshal who has sung the female version of the song also won the National award for it.

It was a major nostalgia for us and we guess for you guys too! We wish Hariharan a very happy birthday!
