Women’s Day 2019: 5 female-centric biopics in Bollywood that will celebrate India’s supergirls

With Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Kangana Ranaut changed the ball-game of women-centric films made this year. The film earned around Rs 141.93 crore at the worldwide box office and the actress earned heaps of praises for her portrayal of Rani Laxmibai, one of the bravest women warriors in the history of Indian freedom struggle. Bollywood has time and again brought onscreen many films which celebrated the valour of women through history. Right from Smita Patil s 1977 film Bhumika to Alia Bhatt s Raazi, the stories of women who brought about a change, who fought for societal upliftment along with their own battles have inspired us and how. And talking about celebrating the valour of women, we also have a few amazing biopics of women lined up this year. Read on

Chhapaak:

Based on the life of acid attack survivor, Laxmi Agarwal, the film will narrate the story of the time when Laxmi was attacked with acid by a stalker whose advances she had been rejecting for a while. The attack left her with severe burns. After battling the burns, she took charge of her own life and now is a campaigner with Stop Acid Attacks Campaign. Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar are set to bring her story on-screen by the end of this year.

 

Gunjan Saxena biopic:

Janhvi Kapoor is all set to play Gunjan Saxena, the first woman IAF pilot who evacuated injured soldiers from Kargil in 1999. The actress will be portraying Gunjan, who was awarded for her courage and valour with the Shaurya Chakra award.

 

Saina Nehwal biopic:

Shraddha Kapoor is all set to bring alive Saina Nehwal on screen. A former world No. 1 champion, she has won over 24 international titles, which include eleven Superseries titles. To watch her story on the big screen would be very inspiring.

 

 

Shakeela biopic:

The Shakeela biopic tells the story of an actor who rose to fame with her lead roles in adult movies in South cinema. The biopic is directed by Indrajit Lankesh and Richa Chadha will essay the role of Shakeela.

 

Arunima Sinha biopic:

Arunima Sinha is the world's first female amputee who scaled the Mount Everest. Based on the book Born Again on the Mountain: A Story of Losing Everything and Finding it Back, the film will star Alia Bhatt in the lead role.
