Republic Day is one of the most important days for India. In 1950, it was the day when our constitution came into effect. It is also a significant holiday for Bollywood because, in the last couple of years, the films which released on and around this date have earned rich dividends. And the biggest example of that was 2018's second highest grossing film Padmavaat. Starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, the period drama was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's dream project. Highest opening day
Day 1 - Rs 24 cr
Padmaavat's release was mired by many controversies. At many prime territories, the film didn't even release on January 25 and yet it managed to score the highest Republic Day opening numbers ever. It earned Rs 24 crore (which includes previews and day 1 numbers). That is still the highest any Republic Day release has earned till date.
Highest Opening Weekend
Box office - Rs 114 crore
A film that started its day at the box office with Rs 24 crore will obviously manage to earn incredible money at the box over the weekend. What worked even more in its favour was the long weekend comprising of 5 days. That helped the film to earn Rs 114 crore in those many days.
Highest Grossing Republic Day
Box office - Rs 302 crore
Padmaavat became the first Rs 300 crore film of 2018 and is the highest grossing film to release on Republic Day. We doubt this record is going to be broken anytime soon.
