There was one catch when New York City commuters were treated to an impromptu pole dancing show on the subway this week: the performer was a rat.
A rat was caught in a now-viral video sliding up and down the handrails of a subway car, posted by the Instagram account @SubwayCreatures. The video was the winner of a contest hosted by the popular account, submitted by user @seebaass_. The surprising video earned the user a Metro Card for a year — if they still want to ride the subway that is.
The rat has garnered quite the online audience, dividing New Yorkers over whether the performance is totally disgusting or totally awesome.
“This is my “why I’m leaving NYC” story,” one Twitter user said, while another posed the opposing view: “Pole dancing rat is -why- we choose NYC.”
“People always don’t get why i have no interest in visiting NY. I just seen a rat pole dancing on a subway. Thanks but I’ll stay in TX,” another chimed in.
“Yup, a rat pole dancing on the subway. Good ol’ NYC!” one said.
The rat also inspired some puns: “Sometimes we New Yorkers get inspired by nature. Behold, the Cirque du Subway rat!” another Twitter user joked.RELATED: Rat Takes Pizza Home on the Subway
Still others joked about the high cost of living in New York.
“Y’all know that rat is only pole dancing to get through grad school,” someone said.
“Everyone’s mad at this, but I respect the hustle of a pole dancing rat just tryna make its way in NYC,” someone added.
Of course, this isn’t the first rat to enjoy viral fame. The most famous rat to come out of NYC is probably Pizza Rat, who emerged from a subway station with a whole slice of pizza in 2015.
Drug lord Frank Lucas, who inspired the 2007 film American Gangster, played by Denzel Washington, has died at 88 years old.
Lucas passed away on Thursday, as confirmed by his nephew, Aldwan Lassiter, who revealed to The Rolling Stone that his uncle’s death was of natural causes.
The drug kingpin is best know for being one of the brains behind the “Golden Triangle,” an area in Southeast Asia where he used the coffins of fallen American soldiers from Vietnam to transport drugs into the U.S.
His origins with drugs came from his involvement with gangster Bumpy Johnson, whose mob boss actions inspired films in Hollywood as well, and even appeared in American Gangster, played by Clarence Williams III.
His drug trafficking using coffins served as a main plot point for American Gangster. The film, which was slightly fictionalized for dramatic effect, earned two Academy Award nominations.
While transporting the drugs, Lucas claimed he was making over $1 million per day while opting to live a lavish life, rather than hiding in the shadows.
In the The New York Times article “The Return of Superfly” from 2000, Lucas claimed, “I had so much f—— money — you have no idea.”

He added, “I bought Harlem, I owned Harlem, I ran Harlem.” His illegal drug reign ended in 1975, when his house was raided by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Lucas was convicted of both federal and New Jersey state drug charges and was sentenced to 70 years in prison. However, in 1981, his sentence was reduced to time served, and he was released.
Three years later, he had another run-in with the police over a drug deal that violated his parole and was sent back to prison for an addition seven years behind bars. He was released for good in 1991.

Lucas’s wife, Julianna Farrait-Rodriguez, suffered a similar fate and was convicted for drug-related charges, spending five years behind bars. After they were both released and reconciled following their prison times, Rodriguez was arrested again in 2010 and was sentenced to another five years in prison for attempting to sell cocaine.
Lucas fathered seven children, and his daughter, Francine Lucas-Sinclair, was forced into the witness protection program with her father in 1977.
According to the article “The Real American Gangster”, Lucas was confined to a wheelchair in his final years of life following a car accident.
Kim Kardashian West is continuing her mission to improve the criminal justice system.
On Thursday, Kardashian, 38, took a trip San Quentin State Prison, the oldest penal institution in California, to visit an inmate on death row.
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star spent hours inside a cell speaking with Kevin Cooper, who was convicted of murdering four people, including two children.
Following her visit, Kardashian shared photos of herself with Cooper, 61, on Twitter.
“I am hopeful that Kevin will be exonerated since DNA testing has now been ordered on Kevin’s case and I remain grateful to Governor Newsom for ending capital punishment in California.”
In the images, Kardashian, who wore a black jumpsuit and styled her hair in a blunt bob, can be seen smiling alongside Cooper.
Cooper was convicted of four murders that occurred in the Chino Hills area of California in 1983.
On the morning of June 5, 1983, a man named Bill Hughes discovered his 11-year-old son Christopher had been killed after finding his body at the home of Douglas and Peggy Ryen where he had spent the night, according to the New York Times.
Along with Christopher, Hughes found that Douglas, Peggy and their 10-year-old daughter Jessica were also dead. They had all been chopped with a hatchet, sliced with a knife and stabbed with an ice-pick, the publication reported.
The couple’s 8-year-old son Joshua had survived. On the way to the hospital, Joshua informed emergency responders that his attackers were white, according to the Los Angeles Times. Joshua’s throat had been slashed and his skull was fractured.

However, Cooper, an African American was arrested. At the time of the murders, Cooper was already a convicted burglar, who escaped from a nearby prison just two days before, according to the LA Times.
He has maintained his innocence regarding the four murders since his arrest.
Back in October, Kardashian asked then-Governor of California Jerry Brown to look into Cooper’s case due to evidence that he had been framed.

“Governor Brown, please add Kevin Cooper to your legacy of smart, fair and thoughtful criminal justice reforms,” Kardashian wrote on Twitter.
Brown later ordered DNA testing to confirm whether or not Cooper is innocent and California’s new Governor Gavin Newsom ordered additional testing in February.
At this time, Newsom is still awaiting the results.
Kardashian’s latest mission comes just after she announced earlier this month that she helped negotiate the release of yet another low-level drug offender from prison after they spent over two decades behind bars.
“We did it again! Had the best call w/this lovely family & my attorney @msbkb who just won release for their loved one Jeffrey in Miami,” she tweeted. “He served 22 years of life sentence for low level drug case. He served too much time but it gives me so much joy to fund this life saving work.”
Along with the message, Kardashian West shared a photo of Jeffrey with his family.
Kardashian, who is currently studying to be a lawyer, has spent the last year helping inmates who were given too harsh a prison sentence seek clemency.
Last year, the reality star successfully petitioned President Donald Trump to commute the life sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a nonviolent drug offender. After Johnson was released, a major bipartisan piece of criminal justice–reform legislation, the FIRST STEP Act, was passed by Congress and signed into law by Trump in December.

In a recent interview with Vogue, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star revealed that she decided last summer to begin a four-year apprenticeship with a law firm in San Francisco, with the goal of taking the bar in 2022.
She has been working with author and CNN commentator Van Jones and attorney Jessica Jackson, cofounders of #cut50, a national bipartisan advocacy group on criminal-justice reform, for months, visiting prisons, petitioning governors and attending meetings at the White House.
“I had to think long and hard about this,” she said of her decision, explaining that she eventually decided to embark on the journey after “seeing a really good result” with Johnson.

Legendary Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda was farewelled by thousands of people from the racing community who showed up to pay their final respects after he died earlier this month at the age of 70.
As Lauda’s body was escorted out of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday, it was accompanied by fellow F1 racer and five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton, 34, who races for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, somberly walked alongside Lauda’s coffin after the private service, wearing all-black with a fedora and sunglasses.
The pair became close friends after Lauda became a non-executive chairman for the Formula 1 Mercedes team, which Hamilton joined in 2013.

Since Lauda’s passing, the British racer has been open about his grieving process and even dedicated his recent Monaco Grand Prix victory on May 26 to the late driver.
“That was for you, Niki. Your fighting spirit was right there with me every step of the way,” Hamilton wrote on his social media accounts.
“I know you are looking down and taking your hat off to us. I miss you, we truly miss you and I hope we did you proud today, legend,” he added.
The five-time world champ wasn’t the only racecar driver to pay tribute to Lauda and walk beside his coffin on Wednesday. Walking right behind him were former drivers Alain Prost, Jean Alesi, Nelson Piquet, and Gerhard Berger.
Prost, a four-time world champion, also wrote a sweet tribute to Lauda on his Instagram after his passing.
“He was not only the best team mate . He was a real friend .A man with a big heart . You are a part of my life Rip my friend ” he captioned the black-and-white kphoto.

Other notable people in attendance for Lauda’s funeral mass included drivers Sir Jackie Stewart and Nico Rosberg, as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Austria’s President Alexander Van der Bellen, according to BBC News.
At one point during the day, Hamilton joined Lauda’s family outside, including his widow Birgit Wetzinger and their children, 9-year-old twins Mia and Max.
Lauda’s son Lukas, 40 (whom he shares with ex-wife Marlene Knuas) was also there, walking ahead of his father’s coffin holding his red racing helmet.
Lauda’s family confirmed that the iconic racer “passed away peacefully” on May 20. His cause of death was not publicly announced by the family.
“His unique successes as a sportsman and entrepreneur are and remain unforgettable,” the statement, obtained by Austria Press Agency, said.
“His tireless drive, his straightforwardness and his courage remain an example and standard for us all. Away from the public gaze, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. We will miss him very much.”
Lauda made his Formula 1 debut for the March team at the 1971 Austrian Grand Prix. He placed fifth for BRM in Belgium in 1973.
The following year, Lauda joined Ferrari and won a Grand Prix for the first time in Spain. He later went on to score the F1 driver’s championship in 1975 with Ferrari.
Lauda’s fast-moving career took a dramatic halt in 1976 when he was badly burned in a crash at the Nürburgring during the German Grand Prix.
“The main damage, I think to myself, was lung damage from inhaling all the flames and fumes while I was sitting in the car for about 50 seconds,” Lauda said, according to USA Today. “It was something like 800 degrees.”
Following the terrifying incident, Lauda left in a coma. “Then my lungs recovered and I got my skin grafts done, then basically there was nothing left,” Lauda said, according to USA Today.
“I was really lucky in a way that I didn’t do any (other) damage to myself. So the real question was then will I be able to drive again, because certainly, it was not easy to come back after a race like that.”
Just six weeks after the accident, Lauda returned to the tracks. He won his second championship in 1977 with Ferrari and briefly retired in 1979, but came out of retirement in 1982 and went on to score his third title with McLaren in 1984.
He then retired for good in 1985 to focus on being an airline businessman. Lauda is the only driver to have been a champion for both Ferrari and McLaren.
His heated rivalry with British McLaren racer James Hunt was the subject of Ron Howard‘s 2013 film, Rush, starring Chris Hemsworth as Hunt and Daniel Brühl as Lauda.
The former Ferrari racer underwent a lung transplant in 2018 after being diagnosed with “severe lung disease,” and was hospitalized with influenza this year, according to CNN.
Lauda previously had two kidney transplants, one from his brother in 1997 and one from his girlfriend in 2005, Fox News reported.
Drake Bell doesn’t think the new cast of Nickelodeon’s rebooted All That is, well, all that.
“This is LITERALLY THE WORST THING I’VE SEEN IN a loooong time!!!” Bell, 32, wrote in an Instagram Story after the new cast was announced this week. Bell’s comment was in response to a promotional video shared by Nickelodeon on Twitter.
“I’m confused is this written or is this their ‘IMPROV’ he rhymes joking with joking like four times…” Bell wrote in reaction to the video, which features the new cast members, whose ages range from 12-15, in a mock audition, singing about how funny they are.
“You should probably wait until the audience says your funny before saying ‘I’m Funny'” he added.
“Not EVEN CLOSE,” he said next to a photo of the original cast, which counts Amanda Bynes, Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Nick Cannon and Gabriel Iglesias among its alumni. Nickeoldeon did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Bell’s remarks.
Bell starred on the network’s All That spinoff, The Amanda Show, from 1999 to 2002. He also starred on the popular Nickelodeon sitcom Drake and Josh, opposite Josh Peck, from 2004 to 2007.
The sketch show’s new faces include Reece Caddell, Chinguun Sergelen, Gabrielle Green, Nathan Janak, Kate Godfrey, Ryan Alessi and Lex Lumpkin. PEOPLE shared the first look at the teens on Wednesday.

But not all of Nick’s former stars have negative feelings toward the reboot.
Thompson, 41, who went on to star on Saturday Night Live, and Mitchell, 40, are executive producers on the show alongside Kevin Kay.
“For us to see the new kids going through what we went through and experiencing the beginning and know what’s to come for them — it’s so cool to see their faces experiencing it all,” Mitchell told PEOPLE. “I’m excited that I’m there to give advice. God made me ready for this.”

Thompson told PEOPLE that his time on the original show “really taught me what I was put here to do.”
“I always knew I wanted to be an actor but I didn’t really know what that meant. It really taught me how to be a professional, how to play the camera … it taught me everything,” he added.
The anticipated return of the series will also see several cast members making guest appearances, including Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg and Josh Server. Nickelodeon announced earlier this month that the Jonas Brothers will perform their new single “Sucker” to close out the series premiere.
All That premieres on Nickelodeon June 15 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Katrina Kaif is undoubtedly in the mood to reclaim her throne as Bollywood’s numero uno. The actress is currently focusing just on her career and on playing characters that would require a piece of her to be put in. From Babita Kumari in Zero to Bharat, the actress accepts that her approach towards her work has changed immensely after getting her heart bruised by her ex-flame. The actress is only focusing on the present and has nothing planned for the future, taking each day as it comes and getting through it with a calm head is what she has now achieved.
In an exclusive chat with Jitesh Pillaai, Editor, Filmfare, the actress threw some light on the phase that broke her and how she put one block at a time to rebuild herself slowly. When the actress was questioned about having a sense of ease around her now as compared to being on the edge earlier, she said, “Maybe, a lot of things have changed for me personally and professionally. After my last relationship ended, I was forced to analyse many things about myself and my life and the way I was living it. Whatever was supposed to happen, happened. Everything happens for a reason. I remember I was getting on a plane to shoot Baar Baar Dekho in Thailand. It was January. There was a repetitive thought going on in my head. When you get stuck on something, it’s deeply disturbing. It doesn’t leave you alone. It was bad. It was sad. I wondered how could something trouble you to this level? That phase made me read a lot. I wanted to understand how we human beings function. On one particular night, my attitude and approach to the world opened up again.”
The actress was further asked if she’s made peace with it, to which she replied, “Some things can still upset you. But that’s fine. I face it. I stare at the ghost in the room until it just fades away. When something triggers an emotion, I let it happen. Like one day I came across something, which I kept pushing away. But it hurt me and bothered me. While I was doing yoga, my teacher asked, “Are you okay?” I said I was fine. She said, “But you’re crying.” I had actually begun crying. It had to come out. Now, I don’t try to push things away. I stare at them. What you resist, persists.” Well, on that note we say, kudos to you girl!
