AGT's Gabrielle Union 'Strongly' Suggests Semifinalists 'Idiot-Proof' Their Acts to Succeed

Gabrielle Union is heading into her first round of America’s Got Talent semifinals — and she’s encouraging contestants to bring it on.

The actress, who is enjoying her first time as a judge on the NBC series, wants to see acts level up in the next stage of the competition as the stakes are higher to win the $1 million prize and Las Vegas headlining gigs.

Applauding 10-year-old opera singer Emanne Beasha on her quarterfinals performance, Union tells PEOPLE: “She left a big impression. She literally was like an angel, got dropped down and was told, ‘Sing for us little angel.’ To be 10, she’s a virtuoso. She’s really amazing. I don’t think there are enough adjectives.”

As for the rest of the singers getting ready for the semifinals, the L.A.’s Finest star says it’s all about strategy. “I strongly suggest idiot-proofing the song choice,” she advises. “Pick a song that people are familiar with so they can have something to compare it to and recognize as brilliant.”

And for those non-singers, the Bring It On star recommends they “step it up,” adding, “Whatever you thought was good enough for the live shows, go back to the drawing board, humble yourself and come back stronger, bigger, badder and better. Leave it all out there.”

Along with Beasha, Union’s Golden Buzzer-winning singer Kodi Lee, who was born with optic nerve hypoplasia and diagnosed with autism at age 4, is also a semifinalist. “I’m biased,” the mother of one jokes.

Terry Crews’ Golden Buzzer-winning Detroit Youth Choir, singer Benicio Bryant, magician Dom Chambers, magician Eric Chien will move on to the semifinals. Comedian Jackie Fabulous was named the Dunkin Save.

Also competing in the semifinals are Lee, light artist Alex Dowis, Julianne Hough’s Golden Buzzer-winning singer Luke Islam, singing group Voices of Service, acrobat trio act Messoudi Brothers, comedian Greg Morton and singer Ansley Burns.

In addition, dance troupe V.Unbeatable (who are Dwyane Wade’s Golden Buzzer choice), Light Balance Kids (who are Ellie Kemper’s Golden Buzzer choice), singer Robert Finley, comedian Ryan Niemiller, Ndlovu Youth Choir and singer Chris KlΓ€fford have advanced to the semifinals.

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays (8 p.m. ET) on NBC.

Todrick Hall Says Taylor Swift Loved John Travolta's Jade Jolie Mix-Up at the VMAs

The Video Music Awards on Monday were full of great moments, but perhaps no other moment went quite as viral as John Travolta momentarily trying to give Taylor Swift‘s “You Need to Calm Down” award to Jade Jolie on stage.

“He was so confident that it was her,” said “You Need to Calm Down” video co-executive producer Todrick Hall this week on Jerry O’Connell’s talk show, Jerry O.

“I loved it. Yeah, I saw it and we talked about it backstage, and Taylor thought it was hilarious,” Hall, 34, added.

“Jade Jolie has made quite the living performing in where she performs at Play Nightclub, and she is a fantastic drag queen. But everybody knows that she is like the Taylor Swift doppleganger. So I think that was like the highest compliment he could ever pay her. He was very confused.”

Jolie appears in the video for Swift’s pro-LGBTQ anthem, along with other queer icons like Dexter Mayfield, Hannah Hart, Laverne Cox, the Queer Eye Fab 5, fellow RuPaul’s Drag Race alums and many more.

At the VMAs on Monday night, Jolie dressed up as Swift for the special occasion, and headed to the stage along with several other members of the “You Need to Calm Down” video after it was announced for winning the video of the year award. The whole crew joined Travolta, who presented the award with Queen Latifah.

That’s when Travolta attempted to hand the iconic Moon Man trophy to Jolie in a now-viral moment.

Jolie seems to have found the incident as funny as Swift.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ€·‍♀️❤Almost got my first award tonight thanks to @johntravolta πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a GIF of the moment.

Jolie also shared a video of the moment right after the win.

“So we are backstage, not really able to process — what did just happen?” Swift asks Jolie in the video. Jolie responds, “Umm, you won video of the year!”

“We, it’s a we, a collective,” Swift says back to her.

Jolie captioned the video, “‪Aaaahhh the most magical night EVER! So proud of my queen @taylorswift for snatching Videos for Good & Video Of The Year at the @vmas tonightπŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»❤❤❤❤❤. ‬”

In an interview with TMZ, Jolie went into more detail, and said that she felt like the moment happened in “slow motion.”

“Obviously Taylor is my goddamn goddess and queen … she’s like my Cersei Lannister,” Jolie told the outlet.

As for why Jolie thought Travolta made the mistake? “I think it’s just that I’m stunning, and I’m clearly Taylor,” she said.

The famous drag queen continued, “Taylor Swift literally said that every one of us deserves a Moon Man and an award, and it’s because of her. And she is f—— amazing. And I say this all the time: every single artist, they could do what Taylor’s doing. And Taylor don’t owe nobody nothing, mama. Because by bringing all this on, it’s harder for them.

Swift also shared her thoughts on the night in an Instagram post, writing, “Thank you to the fans who voted, our excellent cast, @todrick, @drewkirsch and everyone who worked so hard on the You Need to Calm Down video. @vmas Video of the Year 🀯 I MEAN JUST WOW GUYS YOU DID THAT HUH πŸ™πŸ™πŸŽ‰.”

Colorado Mom Who Smothered Newborn Baby Girl Before Tossing Her Over a Fence Is Convicted of Murder

A 25-year-old Colorado woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for brutally killing her newborn baby girl.

On Tuesday, Camille Wasinger-Konrad was found guilty of murder, one year after she smothered her unnamed daughter and then tossed the infant over a fence into a neighbor’s backyard. The baby was found dead 15 hours later.

“Of all the many emotions of the magical first moments of a baby’s life, of all the many tender moments a mother shared in that first embrace with a completely helpless and fragile life, smothering a newborn and pitching its body over a fence in the cold of January is impossible to understand,” District Attorney George Brauchler said, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

“Who are we as people that someone among us has such disregard for the most innocent of lives — a life they helped created? Disgusting,” Brauchler added.

On the early morning of Jan. 2, 2018, Konrad, who had been renting a room in the home of a Highlands Ranch family, gave birth to the baby girl.

She then covered the infant’s mouth, carried the child downstairs to the back deck and threw her into the backyard of a neighbor, according to the DA’s office.

The neighbor discovered the child that night at 9:48 p.m.

Konrad explained to police that on that day, she woke up to bad stomach cramps between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., KDVR reported. “The baby just came out,” she said.

Fox News reports Wasinger-Konrad told police “I just got rid of it” when asked about the baby.

Wasinger-Konrad said she had no idea she was pregnant — but coworkers interviewed by detectives disputed that claim, saying she had told them about her pregnancy, KDVR reported.

Prior to her confession, Konrad initially denied knowing anything about anything about the dead baby.

“That little girl was on that deck for 948 minutes,” Deputy District Attorney Valerie Brewster told the jury, according to the DA’s office. “This defendant went about her day, knowing her unnamed daughter was there, helpless. She thought and made that choice.”

Konrad was convicted of first-degree murder after deliberation, tampering with physical evidence, and the position-of-trust murder charge, according to the DA’s office.

Wasinger-Konrad’s sentencing is set for Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. The mandatory sentence for first-degree murder is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
